Observation
Observation is a different kind of high school romance! Before I begin this review, I must admit I didn’t begin reading the story until weeks after the book had been sent to me. I went on an extended family vacation and then came home to a pile of books and work that needed to get done for The Rebel Christian, so I’d totally forgotten what this book was even about. That being said; I was pleasantly surprised when I finally cracked it open!
As I said before, Observation is a different kind of high school romance—but not in the sense that the main character is edgy or the description is out of this world—this story is unique because its actually about the teachers in the school, not the students. It felt like readers had been given a one-of-a-kind glimpse into the lives of teachers we don’t see very often—almost like a behind-the-scenes scoop.
Observation centers on the new kid in school—a shy young woman named Erin—Rawling is merciful enough to equip our protagonist with good looks and gentle allies but she’s not without her own struggles. While this book might focus on the drama surrounding the teachers, it nearly mirrors what happens to all of us during those four years of awkward teenage angst. Erin faces a new job, new students, new friends, and a new secret admirer. Pull up a chair and take a front row seat to your next favorite beach read.
I don’t exactly love the term ‘chick-lit’ but I can’t think of a better description for this book; you’ve got a very decent story featuring a cast of enjoyable characters and the gentle cleanliness of Christian love budding on the pages before you—what more could you ask for?
If I had to pick a complaint it would be the structure of the writing. The story is told in third person so sometimes it feels a little hard to connect with the characters and feel the romance growing but what bothered me most is that many of the descriptive sentences began with ‘Erin’. A lot of the book reads like you’re checking off a to-do-list; Erin laughed, Erin turned to Cassidy, Erin took a seat—etc., etc. Beyond the structure, I enjoyed reading this book very much and will happily recommend it to others.
