One Night's Stay
I have complained about guts, violence, and gore in books before but in this case its actually a plus. One Night’s Stay is a supernatural horror novel that lives up to its name. Things are creepy and dark, and nothing ever feels right—just the way a scary story should be.
This book has a way of bringing you in from page one and it doesn’t let you go for quite a while. The opening is very mysterious and strong with the motel, the strangers, the odd setting—it all leads up to the murder that rocks the characters and readers alike.
Looking at the book as a whole, I’d say it’s a well put together story; the plot is entertaining and gripping, the cast is filled with enough characters for you to pick and choose your favorites, and the writing is fair. That being said, there are a few things I wish would have gone differently—the first being the length of the story. Let me say first; this book is not long BUT I feel like a lot could have been cut out. Most of the character backstories were good and easy enough to follow but I think if the cast had been smaller it wouldn’t have felt like there was so much to plow through, and the story would have been a little shorter.
Additionally, I enjoyed this book, but I did feel like the beginning of the story was much better than the end. There was a lot of buildup, a lot of drama, and a lot of mystery, whereas the second half was full of backstory and seemed to playout exactly the way you thought it would. That’s not to say the story wasn’t original, just that it became somewhat predictable.
If you don’t mind death and a bit of blood, I’d say this is certainly a horror you’ll enjoy. Supernatural fans will want to sit down with this and anyone looking for something that will give you the creeps might have just found their new favorite read. I have to be honest and say I think this is one of few horror novels The Rebel Christian has ever reviewed and I’m very glad to have had the opportunity to read it.
